This is a self-initiated project for me selling my second-hand stuff in Friend Circle. After graduation, I needed to sell my stuff in my rent house in Beijing, most of which were some gadgets, souces and other penny-worthy konomo. So I decided to launch my “小卖部(Kiosk)” on WeChat Friend Circle, where I could sell / gift them to my friends.
I have long been fascinated by the methods used in seducing customers, and by the locales of shopping - from corner shops and department stores to contemporary suburban mega-malls. I’m constantly influenced by those cyber-punk movies and anime and fascinated by the clash and weirdly harmony of those corner shops or kiosks set in those artworks. From one perspective, it is those shops that make those movie “cyberpunk”, which otherwise would just be movies picturing non-realistic future world. I mimicked a semi-chaotic kiosk with a rather indifferent shop owner based on reality to design this store for representing future consumption. And by asking the question“if this shop existed now, will it make the scenario more cyberpunk?”, I reflect more on the consumer landscape. I want to examine the relationship between the display, distribution and consumption of commodities, human realtionship and consumption of commodities, and the blurry the distinction between the shop environment and installation. The browsing, selection and purchase of commodities is one of the defining activities of modern urban life.
